Playlist #273

Happy Monday, folks! Just a week until I head to Virginia Beach. Also, it’s the Wife’s birthday this weekend! Hurray!

  1. The Gray Charlies, “Mill Street, 1am”: I’m still super-proud of the lyrics I wrote for this one, and the singer knocked it out of the park. Also, Clyde’s guitar solo fits perfectly. Go listen.
  2. Matt Berninger, “Martini Me Fatso”: I love this song and hate its title. The title is awful. The song itself, on the other hand, rocks. It’s nice that he’s putting out so many singles lately. I hope he keeps it up.
  3. Soundgarden, “Blow Up The Outside World”: A classic of the genre.
  4. Nashville Teens, “Tobacco Road”: Much like the Holy Roman Empire, the name is a complete misnomer. These guys aren’t from Nashville and they definitely aren’t teens. But it’s a pretty solid slice of British Invasion rock.
  5. Justin Townes Earle, “Flint City Shake It”: A good ol’ rock’n’roll song about how Flint became a bit of a Rust Belt wreck. And it doesn’t even get into the water crisis there.
  6. Golden Smog, “Another Fine Day”: I’m a sucker for good supergroups. And one that includes members of Wilco, the Jayhawks, and Soul Asylum? Too good.
  7. fun., “Some Nights”: A night of heavy drinking seems like a bad idea when you’re in your twenties; as you reach my age, it seems like a good way to drink yourself to death.
  8. Drive-By Truckers, “Goddamn Lonely Love”: A great early Jason Isbell tune from his time with the Truckers.
  9. Coldplay, “The Scientist”: Remember when Coldplay were a band that played instruments? Good times.
  10. Andrew Bird, “Pulaski At Night”: This one’s on here entirely because my Wife loves it. And it is a damn good song. I understand why she loves it so much.

Playlist #146

Happy Monday, folks! I hear Taylor Swift won the Super Bowl yesterday, so good for her. And in her rookie season, too.

  1. Dr. Dre, “Still D.R.E. (featuring Snoop Dogg)”: That intro is iconic, but maybe if you’re embarrassed to seen listening to a song that drops the n-word as frequently as this one does, find the clean version?
  2. The Decemberists, “Burial Ground”: It’s new Decemberists! It sounds exactly like what you think a Decemberists song would sound like. Your mileage with such a thing may vary.
  3. Coldplay, “Clocks”: I dunno, it’s just such a wistful, sad song to me for some reason. Not even really sure it’s intended to be a sad song, but that’s the tone I’m picking up.
  4. The Greencards, “Marty’s Kitchen”: Ever wanted to hear some of the fastest damn guitar, fiddle, and mandolin playing you’ve ever heard? This is the song for you.
  5. Jenny Scheinman, “I Was Young When I Left Home”: A Bob Dylan cover? On one of my playlists? It’s more likely than you’d think!
  6. Neko Case, “That’s Who I Am”: From the darkly gothic Ghost Brothers of Darkland County musical (written by John Mellencamp, T-Bone Burnett, and Stephen King). It’s sly and clever and has a good bounce to it. I want T-Bone to produce one of my albums someday.
  7. A.C. Newman, “Like a Hitman, Like a Dancer”: I was on an A.C. Newman kick last week, listening through Get Guilty and Shut Down The Streets several times.
  8. Phil Collins, “I Wish It Would Rain Down”: When I was a little kid and this song came out, the main draw was the Eric Clapton guitar part. Now, that’s the part of the song that makes me cringe. God, Eric Clapton, how come you turned out to be such a sleezebag?
  9. Rhett Miller, “The El”: I’ve been thinking about Rhett and his main band, the Old 97s, a bit lately. Probably because they have a new album coming out soon (notification of which was accidentally dropped early by Stephen King).
  10. Sheryl Crow, “My Favorite Mistake”: I wonder if her least-favorite mistake is that one duet with Kid Rock.

Playlist #33: Meredith’s Birthday Playlist

It’s my sister-in-law’s birthday this Thursday, so this week’s playlist is a Meredith playlist!

  1. Cher, “If I Could Turn Back Time”: I’ve yet to meet a Branco who doesn’t love this song.
  2. Mumford & Sons, “Little Lion Man”: Does it ever bother anyone else that his guitar strumming doesn’t seem to be in time with the rest of the song? ‘Cause it bothers me to no end.
  3. Glen Campbell, “MacArthur Park”: Have I featured this song on another playlist? I don’t recall. It’s a bizarre song, though, and I kind of love it. So does Meredith.
  4. Men At Work, “Who Can It Be Now?”: When I asked Meredith what she wanted for her personal ringtone on my phone, this was the song she picked. It’s a good ‘un.
  5. The Offspring, “Staring at the Sun”: Who doesn’t love rock’n’roll singers who also have PhDs?
  6. Muse, “Starlight”: I’ve never really listened to Muse much. I always kinda thought they were a bargain-bin Radiohead. I was wrong. They’re pretty catchy.
  7. Coldplay, “In My Place”: Re-listening to this song inspired me to go back and listen to the whole album again. It’s still pretty damn good.
  8. Cake, “Short Skirt/Long Jacket”: Who doesn’t want a girl with smooth liquidation?
  9. Green Day, “King For A Day”: An uptempo song about being a crossdresser that doesn’t get all weird and transphobic about it.
  10. Linkin Park, “One Step Closer”: I’m about to break.
