Playlist #224

Happy Monday, folks. We’re up bright and early today because it’s the first day of teacher in-service week, when they see if they can crush the desire to teach out of us via the medium of meetings. We’ll see if they succeed this year or not.

  1. The Wallflowers, “Some Flowers Bloom Dead”: One of the first Wallflowers songs I tried to learn (after “One Headlight,” of course). The chords are easy enough, as I recall, though I don’t think I ever sang it very well. That has never stopped me from singing a song, though.
  2. Neil Young, “Harvest Moon”: Speaking of songs I don’t sing well, I kinda love this one. It’s a simple love song, but it just sounds so beautiful.
  3. Fleetwood Mac, “Seven Wonders”: ’80s Mac just hits different.
  4. Glen Phillips, “Men Just Leave”: I still love how stripped down and countryish that first Glen Phillips solo album is. Even almost 25 years later, it’s still very immediate and evocative.
  5. Van Morrison, “Once In A Blue Moon”: Mid-2000s Van is a strange beast, taking elements from all the other versions of him that are out there and amalgamating them into something that still feels relevant, joyful, and vital.
  6. The Raconteurs, “Carolina Drama”: Sometimes you’re the preacher man, and sometimes you’re the milkman.
  7. The Band, “Acadian Driftwood”: It’s always interesting hearing about the treatment of Native Americans/Indigenous Americans/First People (depending on where and who you are) in places like Canada, though a lot of it still boils down to, “Same shit, different government.”
  8. Wilco, “Summer Teeth”: A perfect encapsulation of the wanning days of summer.
  9. Old 97s, “Every Night Is Friday Night (Without You)”: Gotta love a shout-along song from these guys. It’s always fun.
  10. The Decemberists, “Sons & Daughters”: It’s so rare that you hear a song sung in the round in this day and age, but they manage to pull it off.

Playlist #187: The Longs

Happy Monday, folks. It’s Thanksgiving Week! There ought to be more Thanksgiving Carols, right? Anyway, this week’s playlist is all songs that are well over the ten minute mark, because why the hell not? And no, they’re not all Pink Floyd songs. I just put one on here.

  1. Arlo Guthrie, “Alice’s Restaurant Massacre”: I love this song without qualifications or justifications necessary. It’s rambling, barely coherent, and funny as hell.
  2. Pink Floyd, “Echoes”: A band known for going over the top with long, drawn-out compositions like this one or “Shine On You Crazy Diamond.” But they’re usually interesting and very dynamic, so they get a prog pass from me.
  3. Bob Dylan, “Highlands”: Dylan’s no stranger to long songs with fifteen thousand verses in them, going back to at least “Sad-Eyed Lady of the Lowlands.” This one, though, from Time Out of Mind, is my favorite, if only because he keeps cracking jokes. It’s also where I got the title of my comic, Sketches from Memory.
  4. Creedence Clearwater Revival, “I Heard it Through the Grapevine”: Who would’ve thought an R&B groove could go on for that long? But damn if it doesn’t.
  5. The Decemberists, “The Crane Wife 1 & 2”: Really a bit of a cheat, since technically they’re two songs mashed together on the same track, but I’m gonna count it anyway ’cause the band seems to.
  6. Dire Straits, “Telegraph Road”: Mark Knopfler liked to stretch things out once in a while, as it turns out. There weren’t many bands who could get away with releasing a five-song album in 1982, but they could.
  7. Genesis, “Driving the Last Spike”: Yeah, early Genesis tended toward the long, esoterically pastoral fantasies, but this is late-period, early 1990s Genesis, flexing a bit, writing a song about railroad workers in industrial England. It feels different.
  8. Neil Young, “Cowgirl in the Sand”: Still not sure how Neil Young was just…recording grunge-style songs back in the early ’70s like he’s some sort of time traveler or something.
  9. Traffic, “The Low Spark of High-Heeled Boys”: What the hell is this song even about? I have no idea. But it’s kinda jazzy and kinda rock’n’roll and it’s a lot of Steve Winwood.
  10. Van Morrison, “Almost Independence Day”: It almost sounds like Pink Floyd’s “Wish You Were Here,” but not quite. Not quite. And Van does a bit of that weird humming/scatting thing in it. Which is, as I said, kinda weird. But also kinda works? I dunno, it’s early and I haven’t had enough caffeine yet this morning.

Playlist #178 – Jangly Electric 12 String

Happy Monday and happy Autumn, folks! Last week, Clyde challenged me to come up with a whole playlist of songs that feature an electric 12-string. At first, I just thought I’d post a link to the Byrds’ greatest hits and leave it at that, but I decided that might be too much of a cop-out even for me. So instead, I sat down and came up with ten songs that feature electric 12!

  1. The Byrds, “Turn! Turn! Turn!”: Honestly, any Byrds song could fill this spot. All of their best stuff features an electric 12 played by Roger McGuinn. This is the single most obvious song on this entire list.
  2. The Beatles, “A Hard Day’s Night”: George Harrison occasionally rocked an electric 12 on some Beatles songs, including this one and the always-awesome “And Your Bird Can Sing.” It was a close call between those two songs, but I went ahead and put this one on the list because of the electric 12 guitar solo.
  3. Led Zeppelin, “The Song Remains the Same”: For a dude who carried around a double-necked Gibson an awful lot, I don’t feel like Jimmy Page played much electric 12. He does on this track, though, and it’s great.
  4. Tom Petty, “I’ll Feel A Whole Lot Better”: Tom Petty is often associated with twelve string guitars, though I feel like he mostly stuck to acoustics for that. Not for this one, though. Also, the “12 string” part of “American Girl?” Not actually a 12 string, but two six-string guitars played by Petty and Mike Campbell in such sync that it just sounds like a 12 string. Kinda amazing.
  5. XTC, “Mayor of Simpleton”: Just a fantastic song from a fantastic band with a fantastic electric 12-string guitar part in it.
  6. Pink Floyd, “Fearless”: Apparently David Gilmour occasionally deigns to use an electric 12 on some songs, including this Floyd number from Meddle. Such a damn good album.
  7. The Hollies, “Bus Stop”: Another band that frequently used an electric 12. “Bus Stop” is possibly the greatest love story song from the British Invasion era.
  8. The Decemberists, “Yankee Bayonet”: Apparently Chris Funk, guitarist for the Decemberists, frequently uses the electric 12 for his stuff. Very cool.
  9. REM, “So. Central Rain”: That 12-string riff that starts the song off? So damn good.
  10. Gin Blossoms, “Til I Hear It From You”: When I think of ’90s jangle-pop, the Gin Blossoms are what I’m thinking of. This song is a perfect example of why.

Playlist #159: Count It In

Happy Monday, folks. It’s SOL testing season here in Northern Virginia, so I get to spend most of my free time each school day proctoring! Woo! It’s so much fun. Today, we count it in with a selection of songs featuring – you guessed it – a count in!

  1. The Beatles, “Taxman”: George starts us off right with a song all about counting. Speaking of taxmen, I might have to fire mine, since between them they almost cost me $2000 this tax season (instead of the $500 it actually ended up being). Of course, considering my taxmen are my brother and my father, and I don’t actually pay them, I guess you could argue I’m getting what I pay for.
  2. The Presidents of the United States of America, “Cleveland Rocks”: The POTUSes know how to kick it up a notch, and it starts with a, “3, 4!”
  3. Ryan Adams, “To Be Young”: This song just bleeds in from the opening argument with Dave Rawlins (which isn’t exactly a song, since it’s just the two of them arguing about Morrissey’s catalog). It does feature a hasty count-in, though, so it…counts.
  4. Outkast, “Hey Ya!”: Why do so many songs that start with a count-in of “3, 4”? Why do we skip the one and the two? Why is five never considered? Is it because we’re always in 4/4 time? That doesn’t seem fair, exactly. Outkast know better, though, giving us a full four count.
  5. The Avett Brothers, “Will You Return?”: So do the Avett Brothers, actually! It’s nice to hear. And that heavy-strummed banjo.
  6. Pink Floyd, “Free Four”: I’m not sure if this actually counts, since “free” is not a number.
  7. Moxy Fruvous, “Earthquakes”: This one makes due with a, “1, 2, 3” count-in, skipping four entirely.
  8. U2, “Vertigo”: Someone needs to have a conversation with Bono, because, “1, 2, 3, 14” is not how we count.
  9. Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, “You Got Lucky”: This one just gets a “1” before Petty gives up counting and the song just starts.
  10. The Decemberists, “Shankill Butchers”: A trailing, “2, 3, 4” leads off this song about youths who will cut you, they will.

Playlist #146

Happy Monday, folks! I hear Taylor Swift won the Super Bowl yesterday, so good for her. And in her rookie season, too.

  1. Dr. Dre, “Still D.R.E. (featuring Snoop Dogg)”: That intro is iconic, but maybe if you’re embarrassed to seen listening to a song that drops the n-word as frequently as this one does, find the clean version?
  2. The Decemberists, “Burial Ground”: It’s new Decemberists! It sounds exactly like what you think a Decemberists song would sound like. Your mileage with such a thing may vary.
  3. Coldplay, “Clocks”: I dunno, it’s just such a wistful, sad song to me for some reason. Not even really sure it’s intended to be a sad song, but that’s the tone I’m picking up.
  4. The Greencards, “Marty’s Kitchen”: Ever wanted to hear some of the fastest damn guitar, fiddle, and mandolin playing you’ve ever heard? This is the song for you.
  5. Jenny Scheinman, “I Was Young When I Left Home”: A Bob Dylan cover? On one of my playlists? It’s more likely than you’d think!
  6. Neko Case, “That’s Who I Am”: From the darkly gothic Ghost Brothers of Darkland County musical (written by John Mellencamp, T-Bone Burnett, and Stephen King). It’s sly and clever and has a good bounce to it. I want T-Bone to produce one of my albums someday.
  7. A.C. Newman, “Like a Hitman, Like a Dancer”: I was on an A.C. Newman kick last week, listening through Get Guilty and Shut Down The Streets several times.
  8. Phil Collins, “I Wish It Would Rain Down”: When I was a little kid and this song came out, the main draw was the Eric Clapton guitar part. Now, that’s the part of the song that makes me cringe. God, Eric Clapton, how come you turned out to be such a sleezebag?
  9. Rhett Miller, “The El”: I’ve been thinking about Rhett and his main band, the Old 97s, a bit lately. Probably because they have a new album coming out soon (notification of which was accidentally dropped early by Stephen King).
  10. Sheryl Crow, “My Favorite Mistake”: I wonder if her least-favorite mistake is that one duet with Kid Rock.

Playlist #106: Crime of the Century

Good morning, playlist people. We’re well into May now, and the end of the school year is in sight! Apparently my wife’s school got robbed over the weekend, which is exciting and frustrating and led me to create this week’s playlist (though I criminally left off Supertramp’s “Crime of the Century,” which I hadn’t realized until I gave this playlist that title just now).

  1. The Decemberists, “The Perfect Crime #2”: “A heist? A heist! No one will ever suspect us, the goofy band that sings about Victorian women swooning on the moors, of being bank robbers.” That’s how I imagined the conversation went.
  2. Genesis, “Home By The Sea”: A song about a dude trying to sneak into a house and getting trapped there by some supernatural entity for all of eternity. As one does.
  3. Sting, “After The Rain Has Fallen”: I only came here to steal your jewelry, not you, m’lady.
  4. Hem, “The Fire Thief”: Ah, the theft of fire, the prototypical thief with a heart of gold story. And the song’s by Hem, which means it sounds beautiful and wistful and ever so slightly sad.
  5. Iron & Wine, “Arms Of A Thief”: I dunno, Sam, maybe the arms of a thief aren’t as safe as you’d have us beleive.
  6. Uncle Tupelo, “Steal The Crumbs”: I feel like my cat does this, only she doesn’t just go for crumbs. She’d take the whole sandwich, given half a chance.
  7. Van Morrison, “Steal My Heart Away”: I always like to imagine that every thief is really just there to steal your love more than anything else. All the jewels and cash are just a bonus.
  8. The Beastie Boys, “Rhymin & Stealin”: Just rockin’ it old school, or Old Skool, if you will.
  9. LEN, “Steal My Sunshine”: I am not sorry.
  10. Ben Harper, “Steal My Kisses”: Poor Ben. Maybe it’s time to find a new ladyfriend who is more giving with her smooches.

Playlist #63 – Doomed Love

I am returned to the East from my vacation! 5800 miles later and (mostly) none the worse for wear. I am still doing music over on Patreon, where I’ll be unveiling July’s song of the month shortly. Today’s playlist comes courtesy of my brother, Clif, who not only suggested the theme but most of the songs on the list. Let’s jump in!

  1. Bruce Springsteen, “Loose Ends”: Sure, a lot of Springsteen’s songs feature characters stuck in relationships that seem doomed to end in abject failure, but only this one likens the relationship to a tightening noose.
  2. Mo Kenney, “Ahead of Myself”: I don’t know who hurt you, Mo, but you should stay away from them for your own good.
  3. The Fratellis, “For the Girl”: For such an upbeat, poppy band, they sure can turn in a downer of a song.
  4. Goodnight, Texas, “Dearest Sarah”: Based on an actual soldier’s letter to his wife back home, telling her that he felt he was going to die in an upcoming battle and she ought to live out the rest of her life as she would. More than a little dark and sad.
  5. Crowded House, “Don’t Dream It’s Over”: Can you believe some folks play this song at their wedding? That’s almost as weird and disconcerting as playing the Police’s “Every Breath You Take.”
  6. Margot & the Nuclear So and So’s, “Talking In Code”: A relationship ending always strikes me as sad, though a number of relationships are less than stellar and probably shouldn’t have existed in the first place. No one should have to hear someone sing them sad songs to keep them awake.
  7. The Decemberists, “O Valencia!”: There’s always something about the way Colin Meloy sings that always makes a Decemberist song seem like it’s set in the 1860s, even when he makes mention of things like cars.
  8. The Elected, “It Was Love”: As Clif said, “the relationship is probably doomed if you can’t even figure out if you were in love or not.” He ain’t wrong.
  9. The Beatles, “Run For Your Life”: I’m half convinced any relationship involving John Lennon is probably doomed from the start, mostly because of songs like this one.
  10. Old 97s, “The Other Shoe”: If you’re hiding under the bed, waiting for your spouse and her lover, and then you drive out to the central Texas desert to bury their dead bodies, I’m pretty sure that romance is doomed. Very doomed.

Happy Monday after my birthday! It’s a chilly one here in northern Virginia, where they apparently turned off the heat in my school building a wee bit too early this year (don’t worry, I am quite comfortable).   1. Postmodern Jukebox, “Rude (featuring Von Smith)”: Tried listening to the original version of this song by the band Magic! (the exclamation mark is a vital part of the name), and just didn’t dig it. Not a fan of the reggae vibes, I guess.
  2. The Rolling Stones, “Not Fade Away”: A rough and tumble cover of the Buddy Holly classic and a classic in its own right.
  3. The Clash, “I Fought The Law”: The damn law won.
  4. Hem, “(The Angels Wanna Wear My) Red Shoes”: This song was what made me a fan of both the band Hem and Elvis Costello’s songwriting.
  5. Spoon, “Held”: Apparently they used to play this one in their live act, and if it was anything like this rendition, it must’ve blown the doors off.
  6. Patty Griffin, “Stolen Car”: I love me a Bruce Springsteen cover, and this one is damn-near as iconic as the original.
  7. The Decemberists, “Think About Me”: A band with zero interpersonal squabbles/drama covering the band best known for its interpersonal squabbles/drama (Fleetwood Mac)? Yes, please.
  8. The Highwomen, “The Chain”: More Fleetwood Mac. Because more Fleetwood Mac.
  9. The Eagles, “Ol’ 55”: It’s a ballsy move, covering a Tom Waits song, when you’re a band as known for being smooth and unoffensive as the Eagles were.
  10. Pomplamoose, “Maneater”: “Whoa-oh, here she comes…”

  1. Pearl Jam, “Black”: I learned to play this song last week, only 20-some years too late for it to be relevant.
  2. Jonathan Edwards, “Sunshine (Go Away Today)”: Also learned this one last week. It’s fun and folky.
  3. Sting, “Shape Of My Heart”: I just really like the guitar figure in this one.
  4. The Decemberists, “Sucker’s Prayer”: I mentioned this one the other week, and then just put a different Decemberists song on the playlist instead. Here’s this one now.
  5. Big Red Machine, “Renegade (featuring Taylor Swift)”: Am I sucker for recent Taylor Swift? Yes. Is this song really gorgeous? Also yes.
  6. The Beatles, “For You Blue”: I dig George Harrison songs, and this one is just so much fun. John’s slide playing is gleeful and too much fun.
  7. The Avett Brothers, “Ain’t No Man”: I dig these guys, and this song is tub-thumpin’ good times.
  8. Wilco, “Everyone Hides”: I like how Wilco has eased into their dad rock years and are just hummin’ along, making laidback music and having a good time.
  9. Yael Naim, “New Soul”: Pretty sure this was a song featured in an iTunes commercial back in the day? I don’t remember. But it’s cute and lovely.
  10. The Horrible Crowes, “Mary Ann”: Sometimes, you just need Brian Fallon shouting someone’s name in the chorus.
